Me and the Camera

Me and the Camera

When I was a child it was my father who put the first camera into my hands and I’ve never stopped taken pictures since. Watching him aim this little black box at things and then later show me the pictures and slides he had taken captured my imagination.

Photography for me is a way of exploring the world we ignore. I deliberately tighten the view to place your attention solely on a particular subject to expose what is commonly ignored. I focus my lens on nature and animals, both wild and domesticated. When exploring nature I look for the worlds inside and around us. The small, beautiful and intriguing, capturing what most people walk by without noticing. When photographing animals I invite the viewer, to look into the eyes of the creature, to not just see the animal but feel it’s presence, experience its personality. In both cases I am ignoring the world around, focusing your attention on the small details and the subject I have chosen for you to view. I take the viewer into a tiny world that almost looks like an alien planet or place an animal so close to view you are unable to determine where the animal’s location is. Was the cheetah on the Sahara desert or at the Toronto Zoo, is the puppy in the backyard or at a pound. In the end the surroundings are immaterial & the subject is meant to stir emotion. I want to open people’s minds, eyes and hearts to the world around us that we so often ignore exposing the beauty the world has to offer and how we should respect and care for it better than we do.
